Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for light vehicle operations underground
   • Access, interpret and apply underground light vehicle operations documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Plan vehicle operation considering work activity, route, passengers and equipment safety
   • Obtain, read, interpret, and clarify vehicle information and work requirements
   • Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Conduct equipment pre-start checks, ensure equipment is ready for operation
   • Identify, address and report environmental issues
   • Communicate verbally and in writing to other personnel using approved underground communication methods
   • Adhere to emergency procedures, ensure safety of others, plant and equipment
2. Drive light vehicle underground
   • Carry out start-up procedures
   • Operate equipment considering immediate environment/conditions, within recommended speed, engine capability, limitations and capacity of equipment
   • Monitor equipment performance indicators/gauges, ensure efficient vehicle operations
   • Manoeuvre vehicle/equipment, ensure safety of other equipment and others
   • Assess road conditions and site conditions, apply appropriate driving techniques
   • Follow mine procedures for giving way to pedestrians and other vehicles
   • Complete written work activity
   • Carry out shut down/parking procedures
3. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Conduct visual inspections and fault finding
   • Conduct routine operational servicing
   • Adhere to site underground breakdown procedures
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clean and maintain equipment
   • Clean and store attachments and other ancillary equipment
   • Complete all required records and documentation

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

demonstrates completion of operating light vehicle underground that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

organising work activities to comply with site standards

carry out pre-start checks

identify and clearly report environmental issues

clearly communicate with other personnel

carry out start-up procedures

operate, steer, manoeuvre and position vehicle and ancillary equipment

carry out inspections and identify faults

process written records and reports

clean, maintain and store vehicle and all attachments

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when operating a light vehicle underground through:

accessing, interpreting and applying the organisation and site requirements and procedures

interpretation of geological and technical data

complying with hazardous goods procedures and consequences of spills

complying with isolation procedures

identifying and working within mine operational system

carrying out operational procedures and checks
